Garage door cables and drums work together with the spring system to lift and balance the garage door safely. Different spring systems use different cable types, drum assemblies, and mounting configurations.

The correct cable depends on the type of spring system installed on the garage door.
Safety cables are required on extension spring garage door systems. These cables run through the center of the extension springs to help contain the spring if it breaks under tension.
Missing or damaged safety cables can create a dangerous condition if an extension spring fails.
Garage door lift cables may come off the cable drums when spring tension is lost or when the garage door becomes uneven during operation.
Common causes include:
Once the cable loses tension, it can unwind from the drum grooves and jam the door.
Cable drums mount at the ends of the torsion shaft and guide the lift cables as the door opens and closes. Drum size and cable wrap configuration must match the garage door height and spring setup.
Proper cable alignment is important to keep the cables seated evenly in the drum grooves.
Frayed or damaged garage door cables should be replaced immediately. Lift cables cannot be safely repaired once damaged.
Common signs of cable wear include:
Lift cables should generally be replaced in pairs to maintain proper door balance.
A crooked or uneven garage door is commonly caused by a broken cable, slipped drum cable, or uneven spring tension between the left and right sides of the door.
Continuing to operate the door in this condition can damage tracks, rollers, hinges, and opener components.
Wayne Dalton TorqueMaster cables are not sold separately from the drum assembly. Replacement cables come preinstalled on the replacement drum kit.

We've found that replacing the majority of the hinges and installing the rest of the kit does a pretty good job of silencing the door without needing to deal with that bottom roller. If you really feel it needs to be changed, we have a separate process for that, but it's not necessary for most installations.
